This was the scene at the Battle of Anitietam where George B. McClellan's Union army fought against Robert E. Lee's Confederate army. The Union had approximately 87 thousand men, while the Confederates had around 45 thousand men. The Union won the battle with only 12,400 casualties and the Confederates retreated after about 10,300 casualties. The battle only lasted one day, however, that one day was the bloodiest day in U.S history with about 22 thousand casualties.

The significance of the Battle of Antietam was that it was the bloodiest one day in United States history. Antietam was the battle ground where many soldiers lost their life. The confederate invasion was turned away so therefore making the battle a turning point in the civil war for the Union.
